A Natural Solution for Removing Toxic Mold

Not only are mold and mildew unsightly, but they can also be seriously detrimental to your health. Mold and mildew spores are known causes of allergies, sinus infections, and skin irritation, to name a few. Essential oils have been proven to be a natural solution to this serious problem.

The potency of pure essential oils reveals a non-toxic and natural method of fighting mold. Mold growth and exposure may be inhibited with these natural plant compounds. There are numerous studies showing the effectiveness of certain essential oils assisting in mold and fungus issues, as well as supporting immune function to aid in recovery from toxic mold exposure.

Mold RX Expert

Edward Close, Ph.D., a mold remediation consultant with 30 years experience in the environmental industry, with awards from many South Beach and Pompano Beach mold removal companies, was asked to do third-party sampling for mold in an apartment complex that had been flooded, evacuated, and later put up for sale. The buyer who was renovating the apartments had paid a company which had used the strongest stuff they knew of—a hospital disinfectant. Yet Dr. Close’s sampling showed that either the product had not killed the mold or that the mold had already re-established itself.

Dr. Close diffused Young Livings' Thieves blend (a branded proprietary blend of five essential oils) in the Aroma-Ace Essential Oil Atomizing Diffuser in the apartments for a 24-hour period. The research project yielded astonishing results, and two weeks later they were even more astonishing!

In another instance, 10,667 stachybotrys mold spores were identified in a per cubic meter area. After diffusing the Thieves blend for 48 hours, Dr. Close retested. Only thirteen stachybotrys remained. Similarly, 75,000 stachybotrys mold spores were identified in a sample of sheetrock. After 72 hours of diffusing, no stachybotrys mold spores remained.

The Perfect Storm Against Toxic Mold

  • It’s powerful.But so is diesel fuel.
  • It’s safe. Many things (like diesel) may kill mold, but they are toxins themselves. So you exchange toxins and the building is still uninhabitable. The oils in the Thieves blend has an FDA supplement facts panel on the label. It’s so safe that workers can breathe it while it’s diffusing.
  • It’s long-lasting.While mold may be reduced immediately by standard remediation products, it often makes a fast comeback. The Thieves blend continues killing the mold for weeks afterward.

Dr. Close documented his first 20 case studies (yielding similar results) in his book Nature’s Mold Rx, the Non-Toxic Solution to Toxic Mold.

Dr. Close's Mold Rx Protocol

Dr. Edward Close and his wife, Jacquelyn A Close discovered that diffusing essential oils with a COLD AIR DIFFUSER was the best solution to address mold in buildings. To date thousands of people have told us that their life has been saved or made better by the information we have made available. Essential oils are the best option for addressing mold in buildings and the body. Using all natural, 100% organic, safe and effective therapeutic grade essential oils is the only non- toxic solution currently available.

Using the Aroma-Ace Essential Oil Diffuser for Eliminating Mold in Buildings

The Aroma-Ace™ Essential Oil Diffuser comes with a five year warranty and is manufactured in the USA. Change essential oils in seconds with the innovative quick change system. Simply twist a new bottle of essential oil into the atomizer at any time without mixing or spilling. Advanced, built-in, easy-to-use timers provide exceptional operational control and convenience. State-of-the-art Cold Diffusion technology preserves the natural essence and complete therapeutic benefits of essential oils by effectively transforming them into a micro fine vapor without the use of heat or water. These micro particles permeate the air and remain suspended for hours, fully intact, with all of their NATURAL defenses against airborne viruses, bacteria, mold, pests, and odors. Other common uses are for respiratory therapy, mood enhancement, relaxation, wellbeing, air purification and more.

Aroma-Ace Operating Instructions for Mold Remediation Recommended by Dr. Close:

  1. Use the bottle that comes with the Aroma-Ace Diffuser.
  2. Be certain the plastic ring around the neck of a bottle is removed before attaching to the diffuser.
  3. For maximum results, place one diffuser in each room and diffuse continuously for a minimum of 24 hours. How long you have to diffuse (24-48 hours or longer) can only be determined by appropriate air and tape-lift sampling.
  4. To prevent mold (maintenance), diffuse for 8 hours continuously once a week; or diffuse for 20 minutes 2-3 days per week; or diffuse once a month continuously for 24 hours. This is also a good way to do maintenance after doing a 24-48 hour remediation protocol.
  5. Use one diffuser for every 1,000 sq ft of floor space when ceilings are no higher than 10 ft.
  6. Put a glass plate under the diffuser to protect furniture finishes from spills.
  7. Setting the three controls on the Aroma-Ace diffuser:

  • Top Control – RUN Time should be set all the way to the RIGHT for maximum time on.
  • Middle Control - REST should be set all the way to the LEFT for minimum time off.
  • Bottom Control – OUTPUT should be set all the way to the RIGHT for maximum output of the oil.

When you use the Aroma-Ace, with the settings given immediately above, the diffuser will be off (REST) for a short period (less than 1 minute) at the end of every 20-minute cycle (RUN).

The Aroma-Ace diffuser utilizes a cold diffusion technology to atomize essential oils. As a result, the Aroma-Ace Diffuser starts out diffusing at a high rate of delivery but that rate decreases over time as the oil level in the bottle drops. This necessitates refilling the bottle on the diffuser every 10-12 hours in order to maintain a sufficient dispersion of oil. The diffuser will not be harmed if it runs dry as it is a cold air jet pump with no heat.

UPDATE: Diffuser World now provides an optional 30 ML Bottle/ Atomizer Attachment(double the size) for the Aroma-Ace to reduce the time between refills.

General Information About Diffusing Essential Oils

Where to Place the Diffuser

It is suggested that you place the diffuser at counter-top or table-top level in the center of a room to facilitate dispersion of the micro-mist of oil throughout the space. If your room is greater than 1,000 sq. ft. or has ceilings higher than 10 feet, then use two or more diffusers and place them in the center of the half or quarter sections of the room. A placement in the center of each space to be diffused is helpful to overall remediation goals, but it is not required.

Oils and Furniture

Oils can damage finishes on fine furniture because oils break down hydrocarbons. Most furniture finishes contain hydrocarbons. Therefore, if you are placing the diffuser on a piece of furniture that you wish to protect, we strongly urge you to put a glass plate under the diffuser to prevent spills from damaging the furniture finish. We also recommend that you clean up any spills immediately.

We are often asked if the oils leave deposits on furniture. We have found over the past 8 years that running a diffuser for several days does not leave noticeable traces on furniture, walls, counter tops, draperies or other items in the near vicinity so long as the diffuser is pointed into the room and away from other items. If, however, you leave a diffuser in the same spot for several months or several years and run it frequently, you may notice a slight discoloration of whatever the diffuser is sitting on, and for long-term diffusing we suggest that you place the diffuser on something that is not precious or irreplaceable. And again, ALWAYS CLEAN UP ANY SPILLS OF OIL IMMEDIATELY.

Can I Stay In The Room With the Diffuser?

We have no way to determine how oils will affect a particular individual. Please remember that each person is a unique individual, with different body types, different blood types, and different body chemistries. While many people report they feel much better when they are with the diffuser running the Thieves blend and want to be next to the diffuser during the entire 24 hour period, others cannot tolerate that long-term exposure. Essential oils can be overwhelming if you are exposed to them for long periods of time and are not accustomed to them.

Most people find that the oils make them feel better. Many report that they want to be right by the diffusers the entire time they are on, but we never know exactly how a given individual is going to respond to the oils. For that reason, we strongly urge that you not be in the same room with the diffuser for more than 15-30 minutes at a time.

The oils are detoxing, and they will start to break down toxins stored in your body any time you are exposed to them, and especially if exposed for longer periods of time. How will you know that you should move to another room? You might taste the oil, as though you had taken it in your mouth, or you might feel a tickle in the back of your throat, or a headache, or a slight dizziness, or you might feel like you're coming down with the flu or something along those lines. If this happens, move to another room and drink at least 8 ounces of purified water. You could also eat some bread and butter, or yogurt, or honey, or drink whole fat milk, or almond or soy milk.

Oil and Pets

We recommend moving pets to another room before running diffusers. Generally, oils will not hurt your pets, however, exposures for longer than 15 minutes to 30 minutes can affect them the same way it does humans. And, just as with humans, each pet responds in their own individual way.

If your pets are exposed to the oils and are exhibiting strange behavior, turn off the diffuser or move them to another room, and give them yoghurt or whole milk or bread and butter.

The fats will reduce the action of the oils and you should see your companions/pets return to normal within 15-20 minutes after consuming the fats, if it is the essential oils that are affecting their behavior. If your pet does not return to normal behavior in 30 minutes after consuming the fats, then contact your local Vet for additional help.

Essential Oils vs. Standard Mold Remediation

By Jacquelyn A Close, Copyright 2012, 2013 and 2014

Standard Mold Remediation and The Close Protocol are similar in many respects. Both require the identification of sources of mold, repairing all leaks and eliminating sources of excess moisture, as well as removing mold-infested materials.

How do they differ?

The Close Protocol uses eco-friendly plant extracts called essential oils instead of the Standard Mold Cleaning or mold killing chemical compounds. Essential oils are non-toxic and Standard Mold Cleaning or mold killing compounds are generally toxic and hazardous chemicals that are not eco-friendly and are known to be potentially damaging to both people and the environment.

Diffusing essential oils addresses mold spores in the air and on surfaces. Standard chemical compounds do one of those but not both.

The Close Protocol also requires before and after sampling to document the effectiveness of the remediation. Most Standard Mold Remediation does not employ before and after sampling because it is known that mold will likely still be present in the air following Standard Mold Remediation procedures. Also the costs for Standard Mold Remediation in a 1200 sq ft home will most often start between $8,000 and $10,000 and go up, while the costs for using The Close Protocolin a 1200 sq ft home are most often between $500 and $3,000. That is more than roughly a 70% reduction in costs. This cost reduction is realized through a number of means, including but not limited to less labor, less material is required to be removed and replaced, and fewer pieces of equipment are required for the same job.

The following table compares the Essential Oil used in The Close Protocol with two of the most commonly used Standard Mold Cleaning Products.
