  • Which Diffuser Is Best For Me?

What Is The Difference Between Atomizing, Heat, Fan, Vaporizing, and  Diffusers?

A diffuser is any device which allows a liquid to evaporate thereby putting a scent into the surrounding environment. If all you want to do is provide a pleasant scent to your environment, any diffuser will work fine. But if you want to use essential oils for their maximum natural qualities and powerful benefit, only an atomizing diffuser will do the job 100% effectively.

The process of diffusion is typically accomplished in FOUR ways:

    1) Atomization / Nebulization - This new technology uses a cold air pump to force essential oil molecules through an atomizer and into very tiny particles; these atomized molecules become a micro fine vapor that float through the air and keep your environment therapeutically rich for extended periods of time.  You can find atomizing diffusers at Atomizing Diffusers

Pros: Atomization is absolutely the best way to provide both aroma and retain natural properties with essential oils because it does not alter the chemical composition of the oils. It breaks down pure essential oil molecules without separation of the mixture. It produces a particle size small enough for the lungs and body to absorb them rapidly. Most are equipped with built-in timers and pressure output controls for full control over the oil consumption. No method of diffusing is as effective in preserving the natural healing qualities of essential oils.

Cons: Units can be more expensive as it is more costly to create a steady pressurized air flow than to create heat or to rotate a fan. The powerful cold air jet technology is not silent.

    2) Vaporization / Humidification - By using water and essential oil mixed together, a mist can be formed which will fill the air. This mist is produced through ultrasonic waves assisted with a fan to force the mist into the environment. You can find vaporizing diffusers at Vaporizing Diffusers.

Pros: Humidification alone has many benefits especially in dry climates. Also, the negative ions in the water vapor can help filter the air. Using vaporization with essential oils will produce a nice scent in an average sized room. Many vaporizers are equipped with colorful lighting, and a variety of timer options, and are whisper quiet. Essential oil usage is minimal.

Cons: Humidification can be undesirable in high-humidity climates. It is a less effective way to provide aromatherapy because the majority of the mist is water vapor which quickly drops from the air. Most vaporizers will only run up to five hours on a single filling. Condensation can build up on surfaces around the unit. Units need to be cleaned often. Units are typically imported and have short warranty periods.

    3) Heat - By applying heat, either through burning a candle, or by electricity, the increased temperature will cause the essential oil to evaporate into the air releasing an aroma. You can find warming diffusers at Portable Diffusers

Pros: Heat will gently produce a scent and fill a room nicely with only a minimum amount of essential oil. Most are economically priced.

Cons: Heat has two drawbacks. First, it tends to alter the chemical composition of the essential oil which can destroy its purity. Second, it may not be as effective because the size and availability of breathable molecules are mostly filtered out by the nose hairs and nasal cavity. Units are typically imported and have short warranty periods.

    4) Fan / Ventilation - By utilizing a small fan to create airflow, evaporation is achieved when air passes over a wick or absorbent pad which holds the essential oil.

Pros: Ventilation offers an economical and simple way to provide evaporation. Since there is no heat involved, the chemical composition of the essential oil remains intact. Ventilation is a good way to scent a room as long as it’s not too large. Oil usage is minimal. Units are typically economically priced.

Cons: Aroma has limited reach. The minimal size and availability of breathable molecules compromises therapeutic benefits. Units are typically imported and have short warranty periods.

  • Product Feature Inquiries

    • Do I add water? Only our vaporizer diffuser systems use water.
    • How Can I Conserve Oil? To stretch your essential oils, we suggest blending a carrier oil. What is a carrier oil?
    • How do I set the timers? Each diffuser is different. Refer to the directions given in the product listings per product.
    • What kind of oil do I use? Our diffuser systems are designed for 100% pure essential oils. Some pure essential oils are thick and resinous by nature so running a thin essential oil like lemon or orange, or mixing a thinner oil with the thicker oils will keep these units from getting clogged. You cannot hurt your diffuser, so feel free to experiment.
    • Can I use smaller oil bottles on the atomizer? Yes, smaller bottles with the same collar size will work on the atomizer, but the straw may be too long. You can clip the straw to the correct length (cut on a slight angle). It is recommended you buy additional atomizers to accommodate straw length and to minimize blending of oils.
    • Can I use larger oil bottles on the atomizer? Yes, larger bottles with the same collar size will work on the atomizer, but the straw may be too short.  It is recommended you buy additional atomizers to accommodate straw length and to minimize blending of oils. For the Aroma-Ace we offer a 30ML bottle and atomizer. For the Aroma-Breeze, Aroma-Whisper, and Scent Master 5000 we have available the 8oz, 16oz, and 32oz bottles. They will not need a bottle stand as they will stand by themselves.
    • How many square feet does it cover? The Aroma-Ace™ & Aroma-Whisper™ are rated at 1000-1500 square feet, the Aroma Breeze 1000 sf, Aroma-Infinity™ 800 sf,  Aroma-Express™ 600 sf.  Factors such as type of oil being diffused, air movement, air exchanges, as well as your definition of coverage, may cause slight variations in actual coverage. The vaporizing and fan diffusers cover 100-300 sf.  The Scent Master 5000™ is rated at 5,000-10,000 sf of coverage depending on the air exchange rate. The ratings are notated within each diffuser product listing on the website.
    • Will it hurt my atomizing diffuser if it runs when the oil bottle is empty? No. The cold air jet pump will just continue to pump cold air through the unit.
    • Do you have a 12 Volt / DC system? Yes. The new Aroma-Ace™12V. It is fit with an adapter for use in multiple countries, at any voltage, at any frequency, and still runs at full capacity. The pump in the current Aroma-Ace™ is made to run on 60HZ. They can run on 50HZ, but it could shorten the life of the pump and will not supply full output. Aroma-Express™ plug voltage is 100V-240V and is equipped with a USB plug option and rechargeable batteries. Aroma-Infinity™ plug voltage is 120V-240V and is equipped with a USB plug option and rechargeable batteries.
    • Do you have a three-prong grounded plug unit? The commercial unit, Scent Master 5000™ is our only system with a three-prong grounded plug. There are no plans to convert any of our other models.
    • Do you have a commercial unit? Yes, the Scent Master 5000™. This unit is a larger fan-forced atomizer that will hold up to a 32 oz bottle. Oil output is approximately 3.0-3.5 ml an hour. It is rated at 5,000-10,000 sf of coverage depending on the air exchange rate. It comes complete with a three-prong grounded plug. It can also be fitted to HVAC systems. The Aroma-Ace™ is also a commercial grade diffuser that can easily and conveniently bring spa-quality therapeutic aromatherapy to your office, hotel room, or anywhere that you wish.
    • What about electrical certifications (ETL / PSE)? All of our products have been carefully manufactured and tested to comply with standard electrical requirements. We also have ETL Certification on 12V Aroma-Ace™ equipment and UL Certified plug adapter to satisfy use in medical facilities and hospitals. The PSE Certification for Japan (Aroma-Ace) is complete. For more specific information on the electrical certification of each of our products, contact [email protected], or call 855-276-6277 x1
