Summer is now in full swing and with that comes all the outdoor activities that you look forward to all year. Camping, fishing, swimming, and hiking and as you all know with those activities comes those pesky bugs especially mosquitos. If you are like most of us you douse yourself with the strongest bug repellant you can find because nobody likes bug bites not to mention the nasty diseases that these bugs may carry. The only problems with the commercial bug sprays is that they are full of chemicals and they are sticky. Below is a chemical free bug repellant that is not sticky and smells great!
8 oz Witch Hazel
8 oz Water
10 Drops Citronella Oil
10 Drops Lemongrass Oil
10 Drops Tea Tree Oil
5 Drops Lavender Oil
5 Drops Peppermint Oil
Mix all together in a 16 oz or larger spray bottle. Shake well before using and spray all exposed skin before venturing into the great outdoors. Avoid contact with eyes.
Many Americans slather themselves in a synthetic chemical cocktail in efforts to keep biting, stinging nasties at bay. But there are plenty of reasons to stay away from traditional insect repellents and use more natural deterrents. Read on to discover some of the benefits of natural insect repellents.
They Don't Contain Dangerous DEET
N,N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide, commonly known as DEET, is the most common active ingredient in insect repellents because it helps provide protection against a range of insects, including mosquitoes, fleas, leeches, and ticks. However, studies show that DEET can affect the body's central nervous system. There are also fears that it may interact with other repellent chemicals and become even more toxic.
Because of the health concerns, The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends only using repellents with a minimal amount of DEET on children, and never using repellents containing DEET on infants less than two months of age. If DEET carries a risk for children, surely the safest option for all of us is to choose insect repellents without DEET.
Many Natural Insect Repellents Work Better
Of course there's no point choosing a natural repellent if it doesn't do the job. However, studies have shown that many natural insect repellents are equally or more effective than DEET-repellents. Some soy-based repellents have been proven to offer longer protection than low-concentration DEET products. Repellents containing oil of lemon eucalyptus have been proven to deter mosquitoes better than DEET-based products. They can also effectively ward off ticks.
Natural Insect Repellents are Kind on Sensitive Skin
Most insect repellents contain petroleum, parabens, phthalates, and other synthetic chemicals which can irritate people with allergies or sensitive skin. Natural repellents are free from these chemical nasties, so people who break out on exposure to most commercial products can enjoy the benefits without any negative side effects.
Natural Insect Repellents Smell Better
The synthetic mix of chemicals used to create many commercial insect repellents smells downright disgusting. The unpleasant odor can certainly put a sour note on your cookout or camping trip. In contrast, natural repellents are usually made from botanical essential oils like peppermint oil, geranium oil, and cinnamon oil, which smell wonderful. Their alluring fragrances make using natural insect repellents so much nicer.
Natural Insect Repellents Are Good for the Body
The essential oils used in natural insect repellents don't just smell good. Many have been proven to have other body benefits. For example, peppermint oil is a natural energizer which can improve concentration and relax the muscles when applied topically.
Some Natural Insect Repellents are Developed by Doctors
When we're concerned for our health, we turn to doctors for advice. Knowing that certified doctors are behind a number of natural insect repellents, like Smart Stuff Natural Insect Repellent, should give you real peace of mind. Doctors who help make insect repellent are aware of the impact their ingredients have on the body and want to ensure their products help users maintain good health.
With a host of great benefits, consider choosing a natural insect repellent rather than a synthetic chemical cocktail to keep bugs at bay.
